At the Lancaster Senior Life Center, the City of Lancaster, LancasterISD and community leaders came together to have a collaborative and informational meeting. This is an on going partnership designed to shine the light on some of the current things happening in our city and our schools, as well as the upcoming events and community involvement opportunities.
A few things that were brought up were the summer STEM programs, like the BI60 STEM Camp, our athletics department, Back to School Fair, Red Carpet event, the city Trash Off and more. All of these I thought were pretty cool ideas that I know took a lot of time, effort, and team work to come up with to better our community. For those who don't know, the City of Lancaster describes the 2014 Fall Trash Off as a way for residents to "....clean out their home, garage and yard in an environmentally responsible manner. Residents are encouraged to participate in the Spring Trash Off by bringing bulk trash, recyclables, tires, scrap metal, brush, and electronic waste (i.e. computers, kitchen appliances, televisions, etc.) for disposal FREE of cost" (www.lancaster-tx.com).
Representatives from the school district shared details the Red Carpet Welcome event which will take place outside of both elementary and secondary schools on the very first day of school. As the students arrive on August 25th they will be greeted by the smiling faces of parents, ministers, principals, county and locally elected officials and other district and city employees, as they walk down the red carpets that will lead them into the building to start their days.
Another representative from the district also shared with us a special practice that the Lancaster High School Football team calls Midnight Madness. Practices are officially open to start on the next upcoming week and the LHS Tigers wants to be the first ones to hit the ground running so they're starting practice Sunday night at twelve o'clock, where technically it'll be Monday morning. What better way is there to kick off the season and get the "blood, sweat, and tears" flowing?
